The Wooden Bowl — An old man eats alone from a wooden bowl because his hands shake. Then his young son starts carving one for his own parents.

A frail old man went to live with his son, his daughter-in-law, and their four-year-old boy.

His hands trembled. His eyes were failing. At dinner, peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he reached for his glass, milk spilled across the tablecloth.

His son and daughter-in-law grew irritated. "We have to do something about Dad," the son said. "I've had enough of the spilled milk and the mess."

So they set up a small table in the corner. The old man ate there alone while the family ate together. After he broke a dish or two, they gave him his food in a wooden bowl.

Sometimes, when they looked over, he had tears in his eyes. Still, the only words they spoke to him were warnings when he dropped something.

The little boy watched all of it in silence.

One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with scraps of wood on the floor. "What are you making?" he asked.

"Oh, I'm making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat from when I grow up," the boy said, and went back to work.

The parents were speechless. Then tears streamed down their faces.

That evening, the husband took his father gently by the hand and led him back to the family table. He ate every meal with them from then on. And no one seemed to mind anymore when a fork fell or the milk spilled.

What the wooden bowl story teaches

  • Children learn from what we do, not what we say.
  • Patience with the old is a preview of the patience we will need.
  • Dignity matters most when someone is losing everything else.

The moral in one sentence

The way you treat your parents is the lesson your children will one day use on you.

Questions to sit with
